Why choose Matrei?
Matrei has become a favourite destination among our groups, which is down to good value for money, great runs and doorstep skiing. Set in the heart of the Höhe Tauern National Park, this excellent resort stands in the shadow of Austria’s highest peak - the Grossglockner. Featuring a panorama of 60 peaks above 3000 metres, from here you feel as though you’re on top of the world. Attractive and unspoilt, the resort of Matrei offers a good range of amenities. The easy wander from the hotel to the resort centre takes just a few minutes, while larger Lienz, only a short coach ride away, is a popular destination for evening fun.
On the piste
The efficient Goldried gondola, which has its valley station a short walk from the hotel, gives groups speedy access to the slopes. Arriving at the top station, the whole ski area unfolds with a great choice of open blues and reds as well as some black runs. The nursery slopes are right next to the gondola for beginners, while boarders can practice their acrobatics in the fun park. Those who who've got what it takes can tackle the 12-kilometre home run from the Cimaross top station. Whether you plan to visit early or late in the season, with 90 per cent snowmaking coverage, Matrei is always a great choice for mixed-ability school groups.
