Eden Camp Modern History Museum
This museum was constructed inside the original buildings of a prisoner of war camp and is dedicated to explaining the history of wartime Britain. Educational packs and suggested topics of study are available and pupils wanting to cover military and social history from 1914 onwards will be in their element.

York Castle Museum
Recreated rooms, shops and streets depict life in the Victorian era. Thousands of every day Victorian objects, people in traditional costume and York Castle Prison, with its spooky guides, give pupils a fun and educational glimpse into the past. Student packs, resources and workshops for KS 1-4 pupils are available.

Haunted Vaults Tour
York's rich and varied past presents the ideal environment for one of the best ghost walks in the country! Gothic Abbeys, tombs, towers and vaults all provide a scary insight into the Roman architecture and Victorian stories that are synonymous with the city.

Yorvik Viking Centre
Some serious excavations have revealed relics, timbers and artefacts from over 1000 years ago and this exhibition is built right on the site of the Viking-age city of Jorvik. This groundbreaking centre presents an in-depth and interactive look at life in the age of the Vikings and the sights and smells will help pupils to take it all in.

Dig York
Archaeological discovery is prevalent throughout York and this excavation area allows pupils to get their hands dirty as they explore the very ground where Romans, Normans and Vikings once walked. Puzzles, cemeteries and secrets provide an intriguing link with historical study areas.

National Railway Museum
There are usually about 100 locomotives, steam trains and rolling stock held within the national museum at York and pupils studying the industrial revolution will be able to appreciate how these magnificent machines influenced how we live today. The Flying Scotsman, Mallard and Deltic are just some of the museum's most popular exhibits and educational packages for Primary and Secondary schools are available on-line.

Roman Public Baths
In 1930 renovations to a public house revealed the remains of a caldarium, or steam bath, which dated back to Roman times. Further excavations uncovered more baths allowing an insight into every day life for soldiers and Roman citizens. Today the small underground museum contains artefacts and replica articles that help to tell the story of what was life for the every day Roman folk that lived in York in around 71AD.

York Dungeon
Follow your ghoulish guide around the cells and manacles of York's dark and gruesome dungeon. Dick Turpin, bloody Vikings, Guy Fawkes and witches that were burned alive, provide just some of the scary tales linked to York's colourful past. Not for the faint hearted, you have been warned!

Captain Cook Museum, Whitby
Find out more about Britain's maritime history at the 17th Century lodgings that were once the rest of a young James Cook. It was in Whitby that Cook trained as a seaman and this memorial museum exhibits his life and epic voyages of discovery.

Yorkshire Air Museum, Elvington
This is the largest independent air museum in Britain and is also home to the Allied Air Forces Memorial. The 20 acre parkland, which was once a WWII RAF Bomber Command Station, is located in Elvington close to York city centre. This is perfect for those studying WWII history and the award winning gardens or great for a packed lunch!

York Minster
This is one of the most impressive Gothic cathedrals that you'll find anywhere in the world and there are traces of every age from the Roman occupation to present day. This is a working place of worship and educational tours and lectures can be arranged to discuss the history of the building and religion's place in contemporary society.

Thackray Museum, Leeds
Just down the road from York is the neighbouring city of Leeds. A must see for history groups studying medicine through the ages is the award-winning Thackray Museum which is one of the leading exhibitors of medicines and how historic breakthroughs have helped to change our lives.
