Caen
The busy and modern town of Caen has been substantially rebuilt after experiencing one of WWII’s most infamous and intensive battles. There are lots of educational places of interest including: monuments, churches, a fine art museum and war memorials.
D-day Landing Beaches
Omaha, Gold, Utah, Sword and Juno make up the five beaches of the D-day landings along the Normandy coastline. The scale of Operation Overlord is put into context when students witness the size of the beaches first-hand.
Memorial Pegasus Museum
As part of the Normandy remembrance exhibition this museum is dedicated to the 6th British Airborne division who held the eastern flank of the landing beaches in WWII. Students can study the original Pegasus Bridge and many other historical artefacts.
Arromanches 360 Cinema
The Price of Freedom is projected upon 9 separate cinema screens within the only circular cinema in the whole of France. The film uses WWII footage and was created for the fiftieth anniversary of the D-day landings.
Musee du Debarquement
This was the first museum to be built as a permanent exhibition to commemorate the Normandy campaign. It contains historical information, a cinema and a gallery of working models overlooking the artificial Mulberry B landing port.
US Cemetery
The 1st Division of American soldiers landed on Omaha beach back in 1944. Out of those original servicemen and women there are 9,387 buried in this cemetery. When students see the rows and rows of graves they may begin to put WWII into perspective.
Château de Crèvecoeur
This experience takes students back in time to discover architecture, classrooms and people from medieval times. There are many interesting educational activities including a heritage workshop, a museum and a medieval farm yard.
Bayeux
The battle of 1066 has been captured within the threads of the famous Bayeaux tapestry and no visit to Normandy is complete without a visit to this medieval market town. Other sights include a cathedral, a WWII cemetery and several art and history museums.
Suisse Normande & Falaise
This is a picturesque and rural part of Calvados that was the birthplace of William the Conqueror. The area is quite hilly and you’ll find some great examples of traditional villages, Norman castles and some amazing views of the surrounding countryside.
