
Recommended Excursions
Balaton National Park
From dormant volcanoes to buffalo reserves; cave systems to nature trails, there are endless possibilities for educational and recreational excursions on and around Lake Balaton. Conservation and Eco-projects are prevalent around this beautiful natural area.
Balaton Lake Cruise
It is possible to travel up to 70km across this enormous lake and river cruises and boat hire are both available. Students will find plenty of examples of flora and fauna as well as traditional Hungarian villages and towns that have become part of the natural lakeside environment.
Goulasch Party
This is a full day’s activity and involves finding our more about the traditional gypsies of the Hungarian Tundra. Lunch is the centrepiece and a rodeo and carriage ride provide part of the entertainment.
Mohacs Monument
On the southern border with Croatia, the Battle of Mohacs in 1526 was the deciding point in the failed attempt to repel the Turks from Central Europe. This park of wooden figures and sculptures is a permanent reminder of the past.
Hortobagy
This is Europe‘s largest area of protected natural grassland. Most notable are the nomadic herdsmen, within their reed huts, and the beautiful nine-arched bridge near the town of Hortobagy.
Palvolgyi Caves
This remarkable area of passages, caves and natural rock formations extends to 13kms underneath Budapest. Guided tours last about 50 minutes and will take students up ladders and thin stairways so they can see the stalactites and stalagmites and underground lakes.
Budapest Old Town
On the Buda side of the River Danube the old town holds the traditional character of Hungary. Highlights include the Royal Palace, St Mathew’s church and the fisherman’s bastion. There are several museums and Roman ruins particularly in Obuda.
Palace of Miracles
As part of the House of the Future Centre, in central Buda, the Palace of Miracles presents a hands-on exhibition of science and nature with over 100 different experiments and displays. Great for curious student minds!
Parliament
It is impossible to ignore this commanding building situated in between Chain Bridge and Margaret Bridge on the Pest side of the River Danube. The history, architecture and other important facts are explained during a guided tour.
St Stephen‘s Basilica
This is the largest church in Hungary and took 50 years to create mainly due to the original dome falling in during construction. The current dome is absolutely beautiful.
Buda Castle & Labyrinth
There is a gigantic man-made labyrinth under Buda castle making it an exciting place to explore as well as historically significant. Students can either walk up the hill or take the 150 year old train that works on a chain pulley system.
Fisherman‘s Bastion
On the Buda side of the Danube lies the Fisherman’s Bastion, a lavishly decorated late 19th century castle still in its original condition. The seven towers represent the Magyar tribes and offer an amazing panoramic view of Budapest.
Danube Cruise
A cruise along the famous Danube River will allow students to appreciate the beautiful sites of Budapest from a unique perspective. The atmosphere of the city in the evening makes this a truly memorable excursion.
