Recommended Excursions

Alhambra, Granada
The palaces, courtyards and gardens of the Alhambra were originally constructed during the 14th century by the Moorish rulers of Granada. Today, visitors can marvel at the intricate architecture which adorns the red walls and interior rooms. This is a ‘must see’ for school groups interested in art, history and cultural excursions.

The Alcazar of Seville
This impressive castle was originally built as a fort but was later occupied by Spanish royalty. As one of the best remaining examples of Moorish architecture this site has several courtyards, gardens and archways that are typical of the period. The upper levels of the Alcazar are still used by the royal family as their official residence whilst in Seville which will be of interest to history students.

Cordoba
This beautiful city has many fine examples of Roman architecture including bridges, water wheels, cathedrals and mausoleums. The original Moorish influence is also prevalent throughout the city however, the Great Mosque was later converted into a cathedral following the Christian revolt of the Middle Ages, the Reconquista.

Picasso Museum, Malaga
As Malaga is the birthplace of one of the world’s greatest modern artists it is only right that there is a museum dedicated to his work. The building itself is right in the historic centre of the city and has been painstakingly restored as a fitting tribute to Picasso and his art. Inside, within the 12 halls, you’ll find many permanent exhibits, paintings, sketches, ceramics and pictures of Malaga from Picasso’s day.

Maestranza Bullring, Seville
This contentious, typically Spanish, event still takes place throughout the region of Andalucia and a visit to this, one of the oldest bullrings in the world, allows pupils to find out more about the spectacle and history of bull fighting. There is a museum on site and also an opportunity to witness a ‘live’ event.

Spanish Lessons
Just outside of Malaga, in the attractive coastal town of Benalmedena, you’ll find the Colegio Maravillas language school. As this learning centre is staffed by native speakers, this is a great chance for pupils to learn more about the region, the language and the people of Andalucia and Spain. Once your group has had a morning or afternoon lesson there will be plenty of opportunities for practise within the markets and shops of southern Spain.

The Royal Andalucian School of Equestrian Art
This centre is devoted to horse riding and instruction particularly the dressage style of competition. Pupils can find out more about traditional Spanish horsemanship and the various techniques used in caring and training this most graceful of animal. Learn more about coach driving, blacksmithing, saddlery and grooming as you watch and admire the famous ‘dancing stallions’.

Caballero Wine Cellars
A visit to the old town of Puerto Santa Maria near Cadiz is not complete without a tour of the wine cellars that are home to the local sherries and wines that are famed throughout Spain. Pupils can find out more about traditional production methods as well as sampling the end product to find out what all the fuss is about.
