HTS local knowledge
An Englishman, Edward Whymper on 14 July 1865, led the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn (4478m). The party of seven reached the summit without a problem, however on the way down one of them slipped and fell 1200m down the North Face taking three other members of the party to instant death. Controversy about the accident is still a major discussion point even today. The original rope is on display in the Matterhorn Museum in Zermatt and visitors can themselves decide whether it broke or was cut.
