The Ahrntal backs onto the Ziller Valley in Austria and has a definite Austrian feel to it, in fact most people speak both Italian and German. Skiing is concentrated in two areas: the Klausberg and the Speikboden Mountains. However it is also possible to upgrade to ski the Kronplatz above Bruneck. Superb, modern uplift serves an exciting variety of snow sure pistes, and there is full snow making cover. The recently completed Freestyle Snow Park on the Kronplatz is popular with snowboarders. The whole area has a good infrastructure and combines German efficiency with Italian style.
local knowledge
Until 1919 this area was part of the German speaking Hapsburg Empire and was given to Italy in recognition of their contribution to the Allied cause at the Paris Peace Conference. This left the German speaking minority greatly dissatisfied and in the 1960s the South Tyrol question became an international issue. Today, special status has been granted to South Tyrol by the Italian government, which has gone a long way to appease the discontent.
