Schladming is a very attractive and friendly town with lots of character. Set amongst the Dachstein Mountains in the Styria region, the resort is slightly off the main tourist track, but very popular with the Austrians. Making up a part of the Ski Alliance Amadé region, which includes the Gastein Valley resorts, Flachau/Wagrain and the Gasteinertal, which in turn covers 276 lifts, 860km of pistes and more than 30 resorts.
Local knowledge
Probably best known for the World Cup night slalom held here every January, Schladming is highly recommended for mixed ability groups. The area offers some lovely gentle blues and reds, whilst the interlinked Planai and Hochwurzen ski areas offer some easy runs as well as more challenging reds and blacks. The Dachstein-Tauern region is one of the best destinations for snowboarding in the Eastern Alps and the world's biggest snowboard school is in Schladming.
