Obertauern

Guaranteed snow by virtue of its location at over 1600m, Obertauern is one of the most popular resorts in Austria. Despite being purpose built, the character of the resort is still very traditional and there is an interesting blend of old and new. The ski area is interlinked on both sides of the valley. Our accommodation is on the north side of the resort and within easy reach of both the nursery slopes and main access lifts. There is skiing and snowboarding available for all abilities, however advanced skiers will find a special challenge on the mogul fields below the Gamsleiten II chairlift. There are interconnected runs on both sides of the valley.

Obertauern is one of the ‘youngest’ ski resorts in Austria. Between the wars, skiers had to make the strenuous ascent by foot to the top of the pass. In the 1950s winter tourism was still in its infancy and skiers were given 3 free rides on the lifts per hour if they assisted in stamping on the snow to prepare the pistes. However, things really took off in the 1960s when the Beatles shot part of the film ‘Help’ in Obertauern. Today the resort offers some of the most modern and extensive infrastructure in Austria.
